Devon Sports Exchange

Monday 2nd September

Devon Sports Teams arrive at Mokoia Intermediate at approximately 3:10 when they were spouse to arrive at 2:20 not a great start to an exchange. We took our billets home my billets name was Corban ..... Corban Grainger we went to Finns house that night for tea and Flynn and Quinn were also there with there billets Toby and Tremaine we had heaps of meat, bread and salad. Then the next day we had the official powhiri in the morning then started sport with basketball up first we ended up winning 68/26 to Mokoia! Our winning streak had only just started with a score of 28/12 in Yr 8 B Netball Mokoia coming out on top and another score of 39/8 in the Yr 8 A Netball Mokoia coming out on top again. Mokoia won Girls and Boys soccer as well 1-0 in the girls and 2-1 in the boys. They also won the Yr 7 A Netball 28/5. It wasn't until the 1st XV Rugby which Devon fought back it was a great game but Devon came out on top by quit a bit the end score was 68/23 to Devon Intermediate. But Mokoia won 6 out of 7 games so they won the Richard Thomson. I took my billet to Skyline Skyrides and we did three rides on the luge and Corban spent $20 on Jelly Belly jelly beans. After that we went to the disco and had a good time there was some dramas but it was fun. And then today we had a farewell and they departed for New Plymouth at 9:10 

Minecraft ...

Minecraft….

 A huge online multi player lifestyle game played by millions across the world. Invented by Mark Persson is growing by hundreds every day but is that a good thing. You can build houses, Cities, whatever you want really. But can it be used by schools to educate students. Over the past few weeks our class P4 and a few others have been testing that out. 

I disagree with the use of minecraft because it distracts students keeping them inside and taking their mind out of the real world.

 But it does have some positive values like scaling and modelling and being able to use your creativity. You could instruct your student to build a certain thing or build a model to scale of a famous landmark E.g. Empire State Building 

Overall I don’t like the use of minecraft as a learning tool because it distracts student, starts arguments and turns people into robots! 

Mokoia Kids Endure Exciting Farm Run

Friday 7^th June Mokoia kids endured a 7km dash through hilly dry terrain.

 All starting from the rugby posts all 213 kids heard the clappers and bolted for the finish line. There first task was to make it of the streets on to the farm on Moray St jumping an old fence covered in spikey blackberry. Then up through the long grass of the farm which seemed to stretch on forever.

Finally after they exited the gruelling farm they could see the finish line on the horizon. The last few steps seemed the longest and they finished back through the posts. They had done it.

Lab Work

Over the last few days Brad, Amy and I have been making and testing our own lava lamps. We had a question if the water was hotter would it effect the result. Our hypothesis was that the fizzing agent in the barroca which made the lamp fizz would dissolved faster in hot water and our guess was backed up by some science sites. We had three tests cold water, warm water and hot water.
